Potential for reuse coffee machines

Commissioned by Stichting OPEN, Second Use conducted a study on the potential for reusing coffee machines. The research examined ease of assembly and disassembly, technical properties of components, costs, and market potential. Analysis of four different models revealed that refurbished devices retain an average of 50% of their original value.

During the refurbishment of coffee machines, specific components such as grinder burrs and O-rings often need replacing. High component costs and complex assembly processes make some models less suitable for reuse. Labor costs also play a crucial role: an experienced technician costs between €30 and €40 per hour, making ease of disassembly a key factor.

The study shows that reuse is not financially viable for all coffee machines. A minimum profit of € 150,- per unit is necessary to make refurbishment sustainable. A significant challenge remains the high cost of individual parts, which are often more expensive than purchasing a new machine. Improved availability of specific components, such as standalone grinder burrs, could significantly enhance the refurbishment potential of multiple models.
